MCC men capture Pavia title
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's basketball team came through with a huge second-half performance to defeat Lakeland CC 97-80 in the championship of the Pete Pavia Memorial Scholarship Tournament Saturday.
The Tribunes (8-4) trailed by double digits early and by four at the break. Monroe responded by outscoring the Lakers 55-34 over the final 20 minutes to come away with the win.
The defeat was the first of the season for the third-ranked Lakers.
Tournament MVP Algeron Torrance (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) was a force in the paint all night. The sophomore finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Rise Prep) joined Torrance on the All-Tournament team after totaling 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the title game.
MCC took advantage of a handful of technical fouls late in the game to help pull away.
Andre Armstrong (Queens, NY/Notre Dame Prep) also made the All-Tournament team, finishing with 16 points. Eddie Callender (Philadelphia, PA/Lankenau) put together another solid game with 18 points and six rebounds.
MCC outrebounded Lakeland 44-29.
