Probation Training

In September of 1996, the Public Safety Training Center held its first Fundamentals of Probation Practice course for those men and women who have chosen probation work as a career. During this two-week, 70-hour course, students spend one week in class at the PSTC, before going to their respective agencies and working for two weeks. They then return to the PSTC for a final week of training and graduation.

The majority of the instructors for this course are probation officers from the Monroe County Office of Probation, with varying fields of expertice and on-the-job experience. All are certified by the Bureau for Municipal Police as general topics instructors.

This course is accredited by the New York State Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, and those who successfully complete the program will receive a New York State Basic Probation Officer Certificate.

The PSTC continues to be a pioneer in western New York for training those involved, not only in law enforcement, but all of public safety. We will continue to lead the way in preparing men and women to meet the challenges of working in the criminal justice field.
