In 1992 the New York State Legislature passed the Security Guard
Act, requiring that all security guards in the state be registered
and receive mandated training in a series of courses. Prompted by
this legislation, Monroe Community College's Public Safety Training
Center offers the following courses:
- The first required course, is an Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Training course. This course is required as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the NYS Dept. of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics include: the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm. The fee is $60.00. Registration and payment is required prior to class date. See below.

- The second required course is the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course (OJT). This course must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities a security guard. Topics include: the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethics and conduct, incident command system, and terrorism. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm. The fee is $120.00. Registration and payment is required prior to class date. See below.
June 23 & 24, 2012; Saturday & Sunday
- The third required training program is the Eight Hour Annual In-service course. This course must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 16 hour on-the-job training course, and annually thereafter. The course is structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics include: the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct The guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of his or her registration.
All courses are held 8 am to 5 pm. The fee is $60.00. Registration and payment is required prior to class date. See below.
